Rethreaded

The Bury Art Collective worked on a project focussing on the environmental and human implications of the fashion industry, specifically the production of jewellery.

The group recycled materials and found objects to create intriguing 'new' pieces of jewellery to challenge the imagination.

We exhibited this work to coincide with the  British Textile Biennial 2023 and displayed it at the Fusilier Museum,Bury, Lancs.

 29th September - 29th October 2023.

Some work in progress - April 2023

Our textile jewellery group looked at the concept of Wabi Sabi which can be summed up as the acceptance of transience and imperfection.  Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, nothing is perfect.

We explored how certain features are characteristic of Wabi Sabi – muted colours; the mixing of materials and repairs which are celebrated not hidden.  All these ideas can be used in a practical way as we make our textile jewellery.  In particular we looked at Boro  (the art of patching); Kintsugi  (the repair of something with a contrasting material); and Sashiko  (strong patterned stitching which keep fabrics in place without the need to hem or be too particular).

We discussed how we might use or perhaps are already using these ideas in our work.  Finally we studied the work of three artists – Junko Oki, Alice Fox and Raasleela (actually a handmade clothes company) and considered how they interpreted Wabi Sabi.

Textile group meeting 10th May 2023

Group members brought some work along. We had a lively session with a huge range of techniques and materials on show. Plastic bottles, shoe laces, fabric offcuts, wire and felt all featured.

Workshop session 12th April 2023

A get together, with people showing made items and works in progress. As this project develops, so does the variety of items and the scope of materials, reused, found from piles of offcuts, and many different uses found for oddments just put aside in case they are useful one day!

Tiaras, pendants, bags, necklaces, new structures being created from shoelaces, twigs, metal and ceramic leftovers.

Textile group session 12th July 2023

A great collection of brooches, necklaces, fascinators, and uniquely shaped little 'bag-lets'. The project is growing, session by session, and contains work of great imagination.
